Description

Course booking – Essential Self-Rescue Skills – Melbourne Climbing School

This is a two-day course covering tips, tricks and practising rescue scenarios that anyone could come across in the outdoors. These essential skills you should know to become a safe outdoor climber, and the tool-box of skills you can draw from to enhance your everyday climbing experience will be valuable as well!

Here is a rough outline of the topics we plan to cover:

  • Belaying in “Guide mode” or with a Grigri from above
  • Safe Lowering from a locked device in “Guide Mode”
  • Rope management at the belay station
  • Z-drags
  • Assisted hoists
  • Methods for belaying safely if you don’t have a belay device
  • Tying off a belay device
  • Escaping the belay to attend to an emergency situation
  • Lowering a partner past a knot (i.e. lowering a partner more than the rope length)
  • Prusik knots and their uses
  • Abseiling with a prusik backup
  • Abseiling past a knot
  • Prusiking up, and prusiking past a knot
  • Setting up a “retrievable abseil” to abseil more than ½ the rope length
  • Assisted abseil
  • Rescuing a stuck abseiler from above
